The College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick offers the designation LCT (Licensed Counselling Therapist). This designation is one of the most recognized counselling designations in New Brunswick and assists Licensed Therapists in demonstrating their professional validity. The LCT designation has become synonymous with professional accountability and adherence to high ethical standards in the counselling profession.

Step 1: Who's Applying?
Become a Member
Are you a recent or soon-to-be master’s graduate ready to apply for your Licensed Counselling Therapist Candidate (LCT-C) designation?

Step 2: Have I done the following?

1) Have I read the CCTNB standards of practice, code of ethics and by-laws?

2) Do I have a Master's degree with the appropriate courses?
You will need a master’s level counselling degree, or an equivalent program approved by the Board required to qualify for registration as a licensed counselling therapist.
A master’s level counselling degree includes: 30 credit hours of training and education central to the practice of counselling therapy.
One course in each of the following areas: Counselling Theory, Counselling Practicum, Counselling Skills, and Ethics.
Five courses from the following course list: Assessment, Career Development/Counselling, Group Counselling, Crisis Counselling, Family and Marriage Counselling, Culture and Diversity Considerations, Gender Issues, Intervention Strategies, Research and Evaluation, Human Development Across the Lifespan.
3) Do I have/can I obtain $2 Million in liability insurance?
At the time of applying you must provide proof of professional liability insurance for a minimum amount of $2 million per claim.
If you are covered by an employer, you will need to submit this additional form: Insured by Employer form.
4) Through my practicum did I complete 150 direct client hours and 150 indirect client hours?
Your practicum (typically part of your Masters Degree) should involve professional development and a supervised practice in a counselling context.
Students are expected to achieve a minimum of 150 hours in direct work with clients (individual, family and/or group counselling) and 150 indirect work (note taking, furthering education, admin duties, supervision, etc) under the supervision of a qualified professional.
At the discretion of the Board, applicants missing counselling practicum hours upon application to CCTNB may make up these hours through clinical supervision post-acceptance.
5) Is my resume up to date and does it include my counselling experience (ex. my practicum)?
At the time of application you will need to submit an up-to-date resume, with details of your academic qualifications, counselling training, and relevant work experience.
Your work experience should be chronological and include your internship experience.
6) Do I know where and how to get a criminal record check?
All applicants are required to have a criminal record done within the last year.
7) Do I have two people I can ask for a professional reference?
All applicants are required to have two professional references who hold a Master’s Degree or higher in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field, and who can evaluate the applicant’s counselling skills within the last five years, or acceptable alternatives when an applicant cannot supply two professional references through no fault of their own. One of the professional references should be the on-site practicum supervisor, if practical.
8) Do I have a supervisor lined up?
All applicants must have a signed agreement with an approved supervisor (see list of approved supervisors here) as part of their application process. Use the list of supervisors to find a supervisor who specializes in your scope of practice and has availability to take on new supervisee.
9) Can I get my application and supporting documents in by the next deadline?
Applications for CCTNB membership are reviewed 4 times a year by the Registration Committee.
The following 2026 meeting dates have been set for the review of applications by the Registration Committee. Only complete applications will be considered and all documents must be submitted 2 weeks before the meeting date.
•Documents to be submitted by January 22nd for review on February 5th.
•Documents to be submitted by May 14th for review on May 28th
•Documents to be submitted by July 9th for review on July 23rd.
•Documents to be submitted by September 10th for review on September 24th.
Applications will not be accepted past the posted deadlines. No exceptions.
If your application is complex, you will need to consider that your application may take longer to be approved.
Your application may be complex if:
• You earned your degree outside of Canada or the United States
• Your general counselling background is ambiguous
• Other reasons decided by the CCTNB Registrar

Step 3: Apply
There are a number of forms that make up your application to become an LCT-C. We’ve split them up into two types: 1) Forms you need to download, fill out, acquire and submit to CCTNB yourself. 2) Forms or documents you need others to send directly to CCTNB on your behalf. This first section highlights forms you need to submit yourself.
Have all the forms in this section completed? Great! You can send your files using one of the following options.
1) Uploading files directly to Member365 (Recommended).
2) Emailing PDF’s or scans of documents to info@cctnb.ca. Pictures will not be accepted.

1) Download and Fill Out The Application Form & Check List
This is our primary application form to apply for your LCT-C licence. Make sure you have all your supporting documents and information before filling out this form as it will make it easier to complete.
2) Download and Fill Out the Graduate Course Description Form
Use this form to identify the courses required to be part of your degree.
3) Download and Fill Out Supervision Agreement Form
This form is an agreement between you and your potential supervisor. This should be filled out, reviewed and signed by both you and your supervisor.
LCT-Cs must always be under active supervision to maintain a valid license. If they are not under supervision, they are required to notify the College immediately so their license can be placed on hold.
4) Request a Criminal Record Check from your local RCMP Office.
5) Export your resumé as a PDF file.
6) Proof of professional liability insurance ($2 Million per claim)
If you are insured through your employed click the button below to download the Insured by Employer Form.
7) Was your degree acquired outside Canada?
If yes, you must download and submit the “Graduate degree obtained outside of Canada form” to confirm that you hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution.
**Please note: For Master’s program completed outside of Canada, you are also required to complete the CCPA Ethics Primer as part of your application.

The documents required in this section need to be sent directly to CCTNB from the requested person/organization. Some of these forms will be downloaded and partially completed by you and sent to the requested party, but they should be the ones who submit the completed form.
1) Practicum Form
Complete and provide the practicum description form to the supervising professor or university representative, for signature, and have them send it directly to our office.
2) Reference Forms
Provide reference forms to supervisors and/or colleagues. Reference forms must then be sent to us directly by the referrers. A total of two reference forms must be completed. One of your references must be your on-site internship supervisor. Both references must have a minimum of a Master’s degree.
3) Request Official Transcript Be Sent
Order transcripts for all coursework listed on your application (undergraduate and graduate transcripts). Transcripts must be sent to us directly by the establishments. We will accept certified electronic transcripts sent by the university. Transcripts must be final and indicate the degree conferred.
4) Request reputable letters from any regulatory association and regulatory body of which you are a member.

Step 4: Pay Fees
You are almost there! Last step is to submit your application fee. There are two fees to be aware of.
Application Fee
This non-refundable fee is required as the final step of your application process once you have submitted all your documents. The fees for application are:
• $125 for regular applicants
• $100 for inter-provincial applicants
1) Submit payment through your Member 365 Portal

2) You can e-transfer to Dues.cotisation@cctnb.ca
Pro-Rated Annual Membership Fee
Once your application has been reviewed by the Committee, we will send you an email within 5-10 business days letting you know if you have been accepted as a member, along with a link to pay your yearly dues. Yearly dues are normally $460/year however, dues are pro-rated to reflect the date of acceptance into the College. This is a seperate fee from the application fee.
